Use a smaller hook for a mini version.
When I made this I used a worsted acrylic on the hook size noted and it worked up in one cozy evening. Keep your tension firm and snug — the most common slip-ups happen at the first magic ring and at the start of each round, so drop in a stitch marker and count after every round.
I tried a substitution: I also tested it in a DK-weight cotton on a 3 mm hook; the finished piece came out about 15% smaller but held its shape beautifully — a great option if you want a daintier version.
